There is no love like a mother’s love.
There is no hurt like a mother’s hurt when she sees her child suffers, including suffering under injustice.
Imprisoned pro-democracy activist Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak has been on a hunger strike for 46 days. According to his lawyer, his health is failing, but the Corrections Department denied this.
Penguin and others have been denied bail numerous times, even though they have not been found guilty of any crime. Yesterday, bail was denied once again.
Sureerat Chiwarak is Penguin’s mother. She spoke to the media ahead of the court’s decision to deny bail.
“The lawyer told me there’s a high percentage he won’t get bail. Perhaps a hundred percent. But I still insist on the bail. My son can’t go on. Last night, I thought to myself, what can I do? My son can no longer go on. Physically, he’s suffering.“
“I think if today they don’t grant Penguin bail, it means they intend to kill Penguin. They want Penguin to suffer to death. Penguin doesn’t deserve this.”
“He has done nothing wrong.”
“What are you doing? Do you want to kill this child? Do you want to sacrifice his life because he’s trying to do something for the country?”
