April Fools Day was Fake News Day for Thailand. Fake Twitter accounts of politicians popped up everywhere. (No one has been arrested, not that we know of anyway.)
But it wasn’t so much fun for Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Yesterday, Thailand woke up and found that the Minister has a new Twitter account, with already over 160,000 followers. But the tweets from this new account were even stranger than his old one where he was talking about foreigners and COVID-19.
A tweet from yesterday went something like “My ministry whip, whip, whip, whip. I am seed, seed, seed, seed. My people are so damn COVeeeeed.” The rest is in English, no translation needed.
Apparently, the Twitter account was taken seriously enough that the Minister’s team had to inform Matichon Media that’s it’s fake. The account belongs to @seeme55555, with the join date of March 2013. When @seeme55555 revealed the prank, the revelation got over 50,000 retweets.
“I have something important to tell my Thai brothers and sisters…” The number 5 is pronounced “ha.” Get it?
Another popular tweet was when Fake Anutin posted “The problems with the Health Ministry that you all have informed me, I’ve already discussed with General Prayut Chan-o-cha. But it was a senseless conversation.” It’s got over 40,000 retweets.
To keep up the spirit of April Fools fun. Two fake Twitter accounts also joined in. With one pretending to be the disbanded Future Forward Party’s spokesperson Pannika Wanich saying, “I can talk [to the prime minister] instead of you.” Meanwhile, Fake House Speaker Chuan Leekpai posted, “I will allow you to talk. Please go ahead.”
Another politician who fell prey to April Fools was Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit. Twitter account @Stone_nayouung, who has over a hundred thousand followers, assumed the Minister’s identity and poked fun at the current skyrocketing price of eggs with the post “What do you say? Is the price just right?” At least 20,400 people found it funny
Another April Fools gem is this one. @tantawan94 may have only 326 followers, but after assuming the identity of General Prayuth with this post “I will resign from my position as prime minister,” he’s got over 5, 200 retweets.
Meanwhile, this one of the Prime Minister may be a bit of a downer. “If I’m gone, you’ll miss me, just wait and see” only received two retweets.
But the tweet “So frustrated, want to buy more submarines” proved to be popular.
Last, but not least, and can never be the least. After all, she’s the most fiery MP in the House. Fake Pareena Kraikrupt tweeted “The AC at my house is broken. For sure, it must be because of Thaksin.”
