Yesterday (Mar 5), co-founder and headline drag performer of Sunday Gay Night at Maggie Choo’s – Pan Narkprasert (aka, Pangina Heals) – posted on his Facebook: “After five years at Maggie Choo’s, I am beyond heartbroken and sad to say that we have only 5 more gay nights left, ending april 12.”
The sound of hearts breaking echos all around Bangkok’s gay community.
“I’ve been getting hundreds of messages. Everyone, don’t worry. Calm down,” said Kreangsak “Ken” Leing, who co-founded the Sunday Gay Night with Pan.
For over five years, Maggie Choo’s Sunday Gay Night has been a fixture in Bangkok’s nightlife scene and a safe space for all genders. The night features extravagant drag shows by the capital’s most flamboyant queens (Thais and internationals) and their brand of “insult comedy”. Because of its popularity, Pan has been performing abroad.
“Due to new management and a change in direction of the venue, we only have the last five Sundays left. Our plan for now is for the last five parties. Expect something even more extra. Mama [Ken himself] might even perform on the last Sunday!”, said Ken.
However, Ken can’t confirm when Sunday Gay Night will make a return.
“It’s not a matter of finding a new home, but a matter of finding the right home,” he said. “I don’t want to rush and settle for something mediocre.”
“Every fucking party has the beginning and the end. It’s just a matter of time ka.”
